Country: Italy Italy   Region: Apulia    Sub-Region: Puglia

Bocca di Lupo occupies 250 acres of chalky soil at an elevation of 800 feet above sea level in Murgia, near the volcano Vulture. Blessed with abundant sunshine and warm temperatures, the vineyard’s Chardonnay, Aglianico, Fiano, Moscato, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes flourish, producing wines with fresh, vibrant, and elegant flavors. Masseria Maìme estate’s 625 acres extend over half a mile along the Adriatic coast, providing an ideal growing environment for Negroamaro, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Fiano. Together, these estates enable Tormaresca to cultivate both exceptional native and international varietals in the heart of Puglia.

Producer: Tenuta Tormaresca (Antinori)

Passion, courage and trust in the enormous quality potential that Puglia, and especially the areas of Castel del Monte and Salento were able to express, inspired the Antinoris to invest in the region. The idea that, from the start, characterized Tormaresca's production philosophy was to produce great wines from autochtonous varietals. Named for the region’s ancient seaside towers overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Tormaresca adds a fresh dimension to Italy’s world-class wine landscape. Indeed, it is the only producer with vineyards in both of Puglia’s elite winegrowing regions. The Bocca di Lupo estate is located within the Castel del Monte DOC, while the Masseria Maìme estate is in the Salento area, the pulsing heart of this vibrant winemaking region. Tormaresca leads Puglia’s modern renaissance by combining classic winemaking with the latest viticulture techniques to create exceptional wines just waiting to be discovered. All Tormaresca wines are crafted with 100% estate-grown fruit.

Varietal: Aglianico
  • Aglianico Alternate: Aglianico, Piedirosso,

Aglianico and Piedirosso are the two key red wine grapes of Campania in southern Italy. They are used to great effect individually there, in wines such as Aglianico del Vulture and Capri Rosso. The varietal Sant'Agata dei Goti wines made from these two grapes showcase what they are capable of in the cooler terroirs of the Campania's hilly north. Sant'Agata also provides a platform for the two varieties to work together, in its rosso and rosato wines – the most salient use of an Aglianico - Piedirosso blend.

Twenty miles (30km) south of Sant'Agata the slopes of Mount Vesuvius offer a prime example of the two varieties working well together, specifically in the Lacryma Christi wines of the Vesuvio DOC. Here the red wines are weighted in favor of Piedirosso, but leave a vital role open to Aglianico.

92/100 2019 2026 Made with organically farmed fruit, the Tormaresca 2015 Castel del Monte Aglianico Bocca di Lupo is one of the top-end wines from this estate and indeed the whole region of Puglia. This pure expression of the mighty Aglianico grape opens to a deep array of dark fruit flavors followed by sweet spice, tobacco and savory smoked bacon. This is a linear, but full-bodied expression with the tannins to cut through a juicy rib-eye steak. It ages in oak for 18 months.

92/100 2019 2027 Dense aromas of dark berries meld with subtle accents of cinnamon, violet and anise on the nose of this wine that's sourced from the winery's Castel del Monte estate. There's a plushness to the palate where thick-skinned dark berries are holding court alongside baking spice and earthy undertones, with firm tannins and bright acidity lending support to the whole. Drink through 2027.
