2015 Barolo Bussia
Country: Italy Italy   Region: Piedmont    Sub-Region: Monforte d’Alba
Type: Red   Style: Bold Smooth   Class: DOCG
Drinking: 2020 - 2045

100% Nebbiolo The Bussia vineyard in the township of Monforte d’Alba, 350 meters (1150 feet) above sea level with a southern exposure; soils from the Tortonian period, (Saint Agatha fossil marls), calcareous clays with alternating layers of sand. Barolo Bussia DOCG comes from the splendid amphitheater-shaped vineyard in the Bussia Monforte d’Alba area. This historic wine was produced for the first time at Prunotto as a single vineyard wine in 1961. The balance and complexity of the Nebbiolo grapes are enhanced by the vineyard’s varied south to southwest exposure and the traditional aging in large barrels.

Producer: Prunotto - Casa Vinicola Alfredo Prunotto

Prunotto is located in Alba, the most important focal point of the Langhe, equidistant from Barbaresco and Barolo, on the right bank of the Tanaro River. The property sits on a smooth plain surrounded by vineyards of the Langhe and Roero regions. It is immersed in a countryside which seduces with the natural beauty of its surrounding hills alternating with small sloping valleys which are gently woven between the hillocks.

The land on which the Prunotto Estate is located is fascinating and enrapturing not only because of its natural scenery, the colors and the "silence" it offers, but also because of its history and its traditions. Alba itself has carefully maintained its baroque and renaissance palaces and a series of medieval towers which were built by the city's noble families. All of the region, with its castles and medieval towns, preserves an artistic and architectural patrimony which is amonst the most valuable and unique of the whole region of Piemonte (the Piedmont region of northern Italy).

The Antinori family, who themselves come from a similar environment: bestowed with unique vineyards and lands, decided to take on this terrain with the conviction of going down a path which would make Prunotto become one of the most significant companies in wine production in the Piemonte region.

In fact, the company, consisting of a total of 50 hectares, has vineyards in the best wine-producing areas of the Piemonte and has a wine-producing facility equipped with the most modern technology available. This, in turn, guarantees the best quality possible for the wines and solidifies the winery's position in the spectrum of both national and international production.

Varietal: Nebbiolo
  • Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.
A notoriousy pernickety grape, it requires sheltered south- facing sites and performs best on the well-drained calcareous marls to the north and south of Alba in the DOCG zones of Barbaresco and Barolo.

Nebbiolo is a late ripener and produces wine of high acidity and with high tannins. The best Barolos and Barbarescos are perfumed with aromas of tar, rose, mint, chocolate, liquorice and truffles. They age brilliantly and the very best need ten years to show at their best.

Producer Notes and Accolades
The Barolo Bussia, ruby red in color with garnet highlights, is luminous and vivid in color. The nose is complex and is characterized by floral notes and notes of red fruit. The palate is intense with a texture of sweet and silky tannins, while the finish and aftertaste are long and balanced.

95/100 2023 2035 Rose, violet, red berry and pine aromas take center stage on this stunning red. The delicious palate is taut and enveloping, offering cranberry, red cherry, exotic spice and licorice while firm, fine-grained tannins provide the framework. Drink 2023–2035.

94/100 2022 2035 The 2015 Barolo Bussia is one of the most complete and satisfying wines I have tasted from Prunotto in a very long time. A whole range of expressive, balsamic-infused notes typical of Bussia makes a strong opening statement. Rich and layered on the palate, the Bussia develops nicely in the glass. Air brings out the ripeness of the vintage, with plenty of macerated cherry, spice and floral character. Everything is impeccably balanced in the 2015.

94/100 2020 2038 The 2015 Barolo Bussia is characterized by a dusty mineral note of crushed seashell or slate that cuts through the entirety of this wine. That dusty, almost salty characteristic is accompanied by wild berry, wild rose, dark spice and licorice. Both the tannins and the acidity are very well integrated here, resulting in a fine, silky texture on the finish.
